Lake Vyrnwy lies a mere 10 miles from the park. The lake is historically very important to the area; the stone built dam was constructed in the 1880s for the purpose of supplying Liverpool and Merseyside with a fresh supply of water. However, to enable this to happen, the head of the Vyrnwy Valley was flooded, submerging the small village of Llanwddyn. The old village can still be seen during drought conditions when the reservoir is very low, and the foundations of several buildings still survive. Vyrwny is also an RSPB site and is ideal for bird watching, as well as cycling.
Pistyll Rhaeadr is an enchanting waterfall in the Berwyn Mountains, just inside Wales, west of Oswestry and Shrewsbury.

Many mention how quickly they find peace and reverence within themselves, seldom found in our busy and fragmented world.
It's a great place to explore the Berwyn Mountains and surrounding hills, with many walks to suit a variety of walkers.
Tan-y-Pistyll, little house under the waterfall, is where our tea room and accommodation are located. Here you'll find a welcome cup of tea, a snack or meal with a lovely view of the waterfall from the garden or, when it's colder, a warm logfire to sit by.

The world famous garden, overhung with clipped yews, shelters rare and tender plants, is laid out in the Italian and French style. While the Castle and it's restaurant have recently been restored, the grounds still boasts the original statues. The castle, high on a rock above the terraces, was originally built circa 1200 and began life as a medieval fortress. It has been remodelled over more than 400 years. A haunt of the Prince of Wales, this Castle is a great place to come for a day out with exhibitions, shop, restaurant and tea rooms all on offer.
Winner of the Best Visitor Attraction in Mid Wales 2018, you'll find ancient tales of dragons - They tell the story of the red and white dragons found fighting beneath the foundations of a King's new castle, of a colossal giant so big he waded across the Irish Sea, of fierce battles including the Battle of Camlan, King Arthur's final battle against his jealous nephew Mordred. Their legendary tales are from Wales and from a time in history when the mighty warlord King Arthur came out of the darkness to help defend the native Celtic people against formidable Saxon invaders.
This was opened in 1903 to link Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion. It is a 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway and now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. Most of the trains are steam hauled, either by one of the unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.
