I know, we’re proud of that pun, too!
Bog snorkelling really is what it says. The world championship is a 60-metre-long swim in a peat bog. That’s it! Wales may be famous for mountains, but bog snorkelling is a unique test of endurance and if it’s tickling your fancy, then you can take part, too. Who knows there may be a world champion in you?
You won’t be surprised to hear that the World Bog Snorkelling Championships was conceived in a pub. If you want to know which pub and fancy giving it a visit, then it was the Neuadd Arms in Llanwrtyd Wells. And as crazy as it may sound, the sport has stood the test of time as next year will be its 36th year (COVID-19 restrictions pending).
The event attracts competitors from all around the globe, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
If you do, there’s a choice of options for competitors. The Bog Triathlon is the most gruelling of them all, with a 60-metre bog snorkel, eight mile run and a 12-mile mountain bike ride (our quads are hurting just thinking about it). Or there’s a slightly easier (in inverted commas) contest of a 3-mile run, six-mile bike ride and a bog dip (of course).
If you’re looking for fun over endurance, why not enter the Fancy Dress Section? There’s been lots of weird and wacky entries over the years including a pantomime horse and even a man with an ironing board.
Still sounds like too much exertion for a holiday. We thought so too! In that case, why not save your energy and watch the fun with a local ale. Spectators of the event can enjoy plenty of food stalls, live music, and a bouncy castle.
Book your August Bank Holiday 2021 stay with Twin Rivers Holiday Park now and get planning your visit to The World Bog Snorkelling Championships. We’re approximately 1.5 hours away, making it the perfect base for exploring most of Wales. Don’t hang around…dig out that snorkel!
