Another stonking writing performance from Ruth Jones, Stella is a British comedy drama which was mostly filmed in Ferndale in the Rhondda Valley, South Wales. It’s set in Wales and is a warm show which follows the life of Stella, a single mother in her forties who irons the local’s clothes for a living. The story juggles her life and what it throws at her alongside bringing up her children, work, and relationships.
The show ran from 2012 to 2017 with six series and 58 episodes being aired on Sky One.
In 2017, the BBC brought a new thriller series to our screens and many of us couldn’t get enough of it, streaming it before it aired on BBC1. That series was Keeping Faith.
Set in Carmarthenshire, Wales the series was filmed in both English and Welsh and follows the life of a Welsh lawyer, Faith, whose maternity leave is suddenly cut short following the disappearance of her husband, Evan. A second series aired in 2019 and due to its success alongside the first series, the BBC have confirmed a third and final series will hit our TV screens soon. We can’t wait.
Merlin was intended to be a series to rival the success of Doctor Who and even though it didn’t quite live up to those expectations, it was immensely popular. Filmed in various locations including Wales, the series was loosely based on the Arthurian legends, Merlin and Prince Arthur.
Many famous faces lent their voices and talent to the TV show including that of the late and greatly missed John Hurt.
Casualty is the longest running medical drama in the world and since 2012, the BBC series has called Wales its home, having relocated from Bristol.
Casualty first appeared on British TV screens on 6 September 1986 and is set in the fictional hospital Holby City and is strongly linked to its sister programme of the same name. The move to Roath Lock Studios in Cardiff was part of its 25th anniversary celebrations. The show and its cast have won numerous awards over the years, including Best Drama at the National Television Awards in 2018.
Tomorrow is our final edition of TV shows based in Wales. See you there!
